Hello,
Welcome to our blog. I started the blog in 2011 after relocating to Topsham in Devon, where there is a sizeable fleet of Devon Yawls. After looking into the boat I decided that it was ideal for racing, sailing with my father and teaching my girlfriend to sail. So after I little persistance I persuaded my father to go 50/50 in buying and renovating a Yawl. Half the fun of the idea was to take a boat in need of a lot of TLC and produce a Devon Yawl to our specification with the satisfaction value of being able to say "we did that". This was always a long term project but with an initial deadline of having the boat ready to sail for summer 2012. We achieved our initial aim and are now continuing work to progress the boat further. There is much to do before she is at the standard we would like her to be and we are having great fun getting there.
My background in sailing has always been in small racing dinghies, I currently race a Musto Skiff, when I'm not busy with work. The Yawl provides differing challenges to the high performance classes I am used to; for example this winter I had to learn all about antifoul and preparation and painting of the hull, something I never thought I would be interested in. The Yawl is slowly opening my eyes to a different side of small boat sailing.
The aim of this blog is to be a diary of the renovation progress of our boat (DY171), I hope that you can learn from all the mistakes we have made and very occasionally the success. If this blog persuades one person to buy that dilapidated rusty boat in the corner of the marina or boat park and renovate it to a level that they are satisfied with, that would be great.
Happy Sailing,
Rich
